Cray from Breath of Fire IV, one of my all time favorite game XD
I tried to do painting style here, especially taking care of the outlines as if they're the color themselves, but it end up as if it's a separate outlines just like my usual drawing T_T i hope i'll get better next time
This outlines issue frustrates me for quite some time C&C please 8D if any of you have any experience dealing with outlines of painting like artwork, please teach me ;u;

Who would have honestly thought I would end up seeing one of my childhood RPGs spy at me from my computer screen from the Daily Deviations category? Anyway, enough at playing with my heartstrings. It's time to get level-headed, kick out my nostalgic bias for a moment, and critique this work.
First up, the colours. In the game, the sprites were drawn with a light and airy tone. The colours used here. They're light. They're airy. I think this is what draws me most to the work most of all. The artist takes heed of the original art designers conceptual work and reimagines it. I feel that the colours are right on the money; I do feel there should be some contrast with the background a little more so he jumps out just that little bit more, but that's only my honest opinion.
The pose is a simple one. It tells me that it doesn't need to be complicated to serve it's purpose. You can tell he's of tribal folk right off the bat, he carries a large log and the empty, un-urbanized wasteland shows that.
Overall I really adore this piece. It plucks at my heartstrings, but from an artistic perspective, it is also a brillant tribute to a near-forgotten RPG treasure. The colours of this piece is its highest point.
I was looking through my DeviationStacks, just glancing at each one and hastily moving on. But this one stopped me dead in my tracks. Your piece of art made me gaze and inspect ever corner of it.
Your ability to replicate Cray (Love his name so much) and to make him look so flawlessly kick-ass and dare I must say, hot, is just impeccable. All that detail in his body, clothing, and his weapon are all so vivid, thanks to all your marvelous shading and blending. The landscape is just so stunning. The fluidly soft clouds and sky, contrast so beautifully to both the distant land, and Cray himself. I love your usage of lighting in the upper-left corner and having it be a subtle, yet important factor. It's all so visually captivating. I do suggest playing around more with textures. Areas like maybe, the weapon, the feathers, and maybe a leather-y feel in his belt.
As to why I rate originality as a four is because the main subject is from another source, but regardless, the execution is infallibly appealing. I look forward to more of your art.
